When the Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, was announced, many of us were excited to dive deeper into this universe and learn more about it.
But after three seasons, you start to wonder: do we actually like House of the Dragon?
The original series definitely set the bar incredibly high—except for its final season—so we already knew it would be hard to top. Still, expectations were high, especially considering the show’s production budget.
At first glance, it’s clear that the locations and cinematography are spectacular. That alone can give us a serious dopamine rush—but it can also work against the show when we look at it more closely.
The other day, I came across a post on X (Twitter) that made me reflect on the series and brought up some interesting points:
Characters that don’t fully pull us in
Unlike Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon doesn’t have characters who feel as well developed, making it harder for us to form a real connection with them.
Antagonists
We’re missing a Cersei or a Joffrey—characters who drove us crazy week after week and made us feel all kinds of uncomfortable emotions.
Filler
While GoT certainly had episodes that strayed from the main storyline, HotD sometimes feels like it isn’t moving forward at all. Season two, in particular, was frustrating: we expected everything to explode, but it never really did.
Predictable situations
There are very few plot twists, leaving us with a simple storyline that doesn’t always surprise us—nothing we haven’t seen before elsewhere in this universe.
It will never be GoT
As much as we may want it to be, deep down we have to accept that this series will never be Game of Thrones.
The gap between seasons
The long wait between seasons—sometimes up to two years—makes viewers lose momentum and makes it difficult to pick the story back up. With such complex names and lore, it can become incredibly frustrating.
At the end of the day, many of us are watching—and will keep watching—because after almost four years, we want to see how this story ends.
From my point of view, I don’t think HotD is a great series, despite its massive production value. We’ll be waiting for the fourth and final season to see whether this dance of dragons finally heats up.
