5 Songs I Heard This Week That Caught Me by Surprise

This week I spent some time discovering new songs (or at least new to me), and I was pleasantly surprised.

Ever get tired of listening to the same songs over and over?

If that happens to you more often than you’d like, this one’s for you.

One of my favorite things is discovering artists that are new to me or just starting out. The downside is that not every band or song sticks with you long enough to earn a permanent spot in your playlist.

Luckily, I stumbled across a few hidden gems on Spotify that I have a feeling will end up in my Wrapped by the end of the year.

1. “Rocksteady/Heavy Metal” — Emma Ogier (feat. Eden Joel)

Emma’s voice completely caught me off guard. I immediately started digging through the rest of her music, and honestly, she deserves a post of her own.

2. “No Cap” — UltraBomb

UltraBomb is a punk rock trio (that’s how they describe themselves on Instagram). On May 1, they released their latest album, The Bridges That We Burn, and this track quickly became one of my favorites.

3. “World’s Always Burning” — Militarie Gun (feat. Mannequin Pussy)

I was lucky enough to see both bands live in Chicago last year, so finding out they’d teamed up on a song completely blew my mind.

If you’re into Militarie Gun, don’t miss their show in Costa Rica on November 22nd.

4. “Am I Dumb?” — Leisure Hour

Exactly the kind of emo/pop-punk song I can’t get enough of. They’re a band from Indiana, and you can definitely hear those Midwest emo influences throughout the track.

5. “Another Round of Radical’Ritas, Please” — Riley! (feat. Tades Sanville of Hot Mulligan)

I’ll admit it—I have a soft spot for Hot Mulligan. They’re easily my favorite band of the last decade.

On this track, Tades lends his vocals to Riley!, and the result is everything I love about Midwest emo and punk rock. (Shocking, I know, that I’d recommend a song like this.)

I hope you enjoy these recommendations as much as I have. I’d never heard any of these songs before, but they’ve become part of my daily rotation over the past few days.
