Did you ever have to read The Odyssey in school?
If the answer is yes, you’ll probably get a few flashbacks when you watch Christopher Nolan’s new movie.
Based on Homer’s epic, the film is set in the ancient world, mostly in Greece, and Nolan adds an interesting twist to this legendary story.
It’s a pretty ambitious production—so ambitious that it was shot entirely in IMAX—and it’s already on track to surpass the $1 billion mark at the box office.
But what makes it so interesting if so many of us already know the story?
Well, that’s exactly the point. Since this is a story that already lives in the minds of many viewers, we inevitably become critics of the adaptation itself.
With stunning cinematography and effects that are used just right, the movie gives us some truly striking scenes, like the Cyclops and the Trojan Horse. Their sheer visual presence makes them the kind of images that stick with you long after the credits roll.
Brilliant performances from Matt Damon as Odysseus and Anne Hathaway as Penelope elevate Nolan’s vision even further. The “villains” are also handled really well, making us hate them throughout the movie—especially Antinous, played by Robert Pattinson.
But is it worth going to the theater to see it?
My recommendation is yes—but see it in IMAX. Even though, in my opinion, it’s not Nolan’s best movie, it’s still an interesting and entertaining film.
Would I watch it again? Probably. Although I’ve heard plenty of people say that seeing it once is more than enough.
If you get the chance, head to your favorite theater and check out this take on a literary masterpiece. And if you don’t like it, at least you’ll get to relive some memories from that time when you had to read The Odyssey—whether you wanted to or not.
